Hello Dr. Mathis,

My name is M., and I’m writing to
let you know I’m very inspired by your work, both the type of work you do, and
the effort you’ve put into becoming a domestic abuse counselor. I read an
article which said you were a victim of domestic violence, then returned to
school, while working a full time job as a single mother.

I’m in the Air Force, currently
serving in Afghanistan. I’ve teetered back and forth between finishing my BA in
English, or switching over to a Psychology B.S. I’ve taken more classes in
English, but I find myself no longer enjoying them. I’ve decided to switch over
to Psychology, although this entails 6 additional classes before I’m able to
receive my BA. Regardless, it’s what I’m truly passionate about. In the long
run, I would like to counsel victims of domestic violence.

My general interest in human nature
aside, my father was abusive towards my mother during my early childhood, and
now, after a 20 year marriage, my step-mom is leaving him for this same reason.
I never realized how pervasive this problem is in America. I just watched a
documentary called “Searching for Angela Shelton” which is a small survey of
women across America who deal with such issues. It’s heartbreaking to see how
saturated our culture is with violence towards women. I also recently read “Why
Does He Do That” which helped me to understand the mentality of an abuser.

I hope you don’t mind my writing
you; again, I just wanted to let you know, although I have a full time job and
worried I could never juggle all my goals, I’m newly inspired to continue to
pursue the degree I’m truly passionate about. You’ve given me a hope I can
actually achieve this goal, despite my busy schedule. If you have any
suggestions for how I might get into domestic abuse counseling specifically, as
most degrees seem to focus on general family counseling, please let me know.
I’ll be getting out of the military in 1 ½ years, and want to take a graduate
program which will prepare me for this type of career.

Thank you,

M
