Finding Peace in the Storm
by Kathie Mathis Psy.D, D.D.
Peace isn’t the absence of chaos.
It’s the presence of something steady… inside you… even when everything else is falling apart.
Finding peace in the storm means anchoring yourself—not in outcomes, not in control—but in something deeper than fear.
Something that doesn’t disappear just because life gets loud.
Because the truth is…
storms don’t ask for your permission.
They don’t wait until you’re ready.
They don’t care how badly you want things to be different.
And that’s the moment everything inside you wants to grip tighter…
fix faster…
figure it all out.
But peace doesn’t live there.
Peace lives in a different place.
It lives in the breath you take when you don’t know what’s coming next…
and you take it anyway.
It lives in choosing to stay present… instead of spiraling into what-ifs.
It lives in loosening your grip… when control is the only thing that feels safe.
It’s not denial.
It’s not pretending things are okay.
It’s standing in the middle of what isn’t okay…
and deciding you won’t abandon yourself in it.
So you shift.
You stop staring only at what’s breaking…
and start noticing what’s still holding.
You stop asking, “How do I make this stop?”
and start asking, “How do I stay with myself through this?”
And that changes everything.
Because the storm might still rage.
The noise might still be deafening.
Nothing outside of you may settle right away…
But something inside of you does.
A quiet.
A grounding.
A knowing.
That you don’t have to control everything to be okay.
That you don’t have to solve everything to survive this moment.
That you can feel overwhelmed… and still be steady.
Because peace is not the absence of conflict or inner chaos…
it’s the choice not to engage in it.
And maybe that’s what peace really is—
Not a life without storms…
but a self you don’t lose…
no matter how hard it rains.
