Peace as a Practice: Reclaiming Calm in a Chaotic World

Kathie Mathis, Psy.D.

Peace has become a priority for me. Not because life got easier…but because it didn’t.

And I realized something—if I didn’t learn how to access peace within the chaos…

I was going to spend my life waiting for conditions that may never come. So today isn’t about eliminating stress. It’s about changing your relationship to it. Because peace isn’t something you find at the end of life being “fixed.”

It’s something you practice—right in the middle of it.

Peace vs. Happiness

  • Happiness = often external, conditional, temporary
  • Peace = internal, accessible, sustainable

Key to getting peace

We’ve been trained to build peace from the outside in…but real peace is built from the inside out.

Ask yourself:

  • “When do you feel most peaceful?”
  • “What’s usually happening—or not happening—in those moments?”

Peace is Not a Destination

We chase peace like it’s a place:

  • the perfect environment
  • the right relationship
  • the moment everything settles

But those moments don’t last.  So let’s Reframe:

Those things don’t create peace…   they remove enough noise for you to notice it.

Peace is a Practice  Not dramatic.  Not loud.  Not instant.  It’s built in small, repeatable choices.

Say what?! You don’t build peace by controlling life… you build it by changing how you meet life.

12 Practices of Peace

“These aren’t rules—they’re doorways.”

Move through quickly, with brief explanation:

  1. Slow Down– Peace cannot catch up to you if you’re always rushing
  2. Listen to Your Body– Your body always knows before your mind admits
  3. Know Your Triggers– Awareness creates choice
  4. Challenge Your Beliefs– Especially “I can’t be peaceful”
  5. Practice Acceptance– Not giving up, but letting go of control
  6. Stop Comparing– Comparison disconnects you from yourself
  7. Release Emotional Weight– Resentment keeps you tied to pain
  8. Simplify– Peace needs space
  9. Let Go of Outcomes– Not everything needs a result
  10. Tolerate Stillness– Peace lives where distraction ends
  11. Do What You Love– Aliveness and peace are connected
  12. Connect to Something Bigger– Awe creates perspective

Ask yourself:  “Which one of these 12 rules do you resist the most?”

Then know this:  “That resistance is your doorway.

”Peace is a Choice

I used to think choosing peace would make me passive. It doesn’t. It makes you clear. It makes you grounded.

It takes you off the emotional roller coaster of reaction. And gives you something more powerful:

Choice!!  Peace isn’t when the chaos disappears…it’s when you stop letting it have access to all of you.

So the real question becomes:  Not “How do I get rid of the chaos?” But…“How much of me am I willing to give it?”

And that answer—

that choice—

is where your peace begins.
